Step forward to the now and find that the base line similarities of how the ancient and current cultures use 'dance', specifically Trance Dance as taught to me via Natalie Institute. The purpose is very similar when we use Trance Dance as a form of worship and prayer, as a way to 'take an inner journey' which allows us to access those deeper aspects of ourselves that are wanting healing, as a way to discover parallel realities, to reconnect with spirit, as a way to 'recreate' ourselves, and to solve problems. Trance Dance is a powerful 'vehicle of transformation' and offers self empowerment and self development.
What is different in the current 'dance' or Trance Dance is that we are probably not dancing outdoors around the fire, or have people drumming on logs but are dancing within a building and the music is coming through an amplified sound system from various CD tracks. The next biggest distinction is that you will find 'many shamans dancing' for their 'own answers' instead of 'one shaman dancing' who is giving US the answers, and the Trance Dance being facilitated by a trained Trance Dance facilitator.
The elements of a Trance Dance include: intention, a blind fold, and music with dynamic percussive rhythms, transformational breathing techniques, and surrendering to the process. The unique musical soundtracks and sets are specifically designed for this type of transformational healing/activity. When the 'trance state' is reached during the dance it promotes mental clarity, spiritual awakenings, physical stamina, and emotional well-being. The 'dancing shaman' steps out of normal perceptions of space/time.
The role of the facilitator is a 'sacred honor'. We chose and play the specific music for the 'dancers', hold the space and keep dancers safe while they are 'blindfolded and on their 'inner journey' as well as help with intention setting, how to surrender, and teaching them the breathing technique. At the beginning of each dance the facilitator walks you through the process and at the end of the dance facilitate a process of group sharing of experiences. The clearest guidelines for a facilitator are to not interfere with 'someone's dance' unless there is present danger and do not interpret anyone else's 'dance experience'. Both are great wisdom teachings in the walk of life and can really be applied to all situations as well.
Why do dancers wear a blindfold? Studies have shown that 80% of our reality is seen and perceived through our eyes and is simply a repeat of the day before and the day before that and the day before that. And that we are simply 'projecting' the same things day after day. Many things happen when one places a blindfold over the eyes. The 'ego' gets confused, control is diminished, the brain becomes less distracted by what it's seeing, and all of the other 5 senses become enhanced once sight is taken away. The sense of smell increases, our hearing magnifies, the taste buds awaken, and our skin becomes alive and very sensitive. The other thing that happens behind the blindfold is that a 'blank slate' appears to be used for viewing and the 3rd eye or inner vision opens up and you begin to have things revealed to you that you have never seen before.
What should I bring to the dance? Wear loose comfortable clothing, water bottle in a closed container, a blanket, and have openness to have a new experience.
Is there anyone that shouldn't dance? No there really are no contraindications for trance dance however you should be aware of your own body and rest if needed.
Do I need to know how to Trance Dance? No dance experience is required.
